Some tips for Volvo 240 owners: Did you know that many of the electrical problems start with corroded fuses? The fuse looks fine but the tips of the fuses, the contacts get a hard corrosion with resulting voltage loss. Best to replace the corroded ones with new ones cleaning the prongs they snap into and coating the tips of the fuses with vaseline to prevent oxidation and corrosion.
Don't forget the spade fuse under the hood just to the rear of the battery. Many won't start problems begin here. When the fuse holder gets corrosion best to cut it out and replace it. Most auto parts houses have the fuse holders for small change.
More Volvo 240 tips: Lubricate the hood and door hinges. We see too many come into the shop with buckled hoods or broken door hinges.
Volvo flame traps and oil leaks: Non turbo Volvos have flame traps through which the engine "breathes". When the engine is in good shape and the flame trap is clean there will be a slight vacuum in the crankcase, hence no pressure on the oil seals. If the flame trap or the hoses to it get plugged the crankcase pressure builds up and you get oil leaks and blown seals. Note that with the throttle open the crankcase breathes through the large flame trap hose. On idle the engine breathes through the small hose. Sometimes the hoses get plugged or in the case of the small hose the orifice on the manifold gets plugged. The little orifice can be cleaned by straightening out a large paper clip and using it to rod out the orifice.
The trouble with the 1981-87 flame traps. On these cars the opening in the flame trap was smaller than the 1988 up models which had an 8mm or 5/16" hole. Solution: Drill out the plastic flame trap holder to 8mm / 5/16" and you will prevent or lessen oil leak problems.
Better gas mileage on BMW, Mercedes and Volvo cars: An idea, applicable to Volvo cars through 1988. Aside from keeping the air filter clean and your Volvo properly tuned there isn't much you can change about how it runs ... or is there? The oxygen feedback system keeps your Volvo optimally tuned as far as the fuel delivery is concerned, I don't recommend trying to change it. Something you might try, especially with ethanol added to the fuel system is experimenting with advancing the spark slightly. On 240 Volvos the distributor rotor turns clockwise, so rotating the distributor housing counter-clockwise slightly will advance the spark.
Before you try this, scribe a line on the housing and block so you can easily change it back if you wish. The lockbolt on the block side of the distributor is 13mm. Sometimes the distributor is stuck from years of not being adjusted so you may need some penetrating oil. Loosen the lockbolt and rotate the distributor counterclockwise, maybe 3-4mm / 1/8" at the most. Drive the car around enough to make sure it doesn't ping on hills or kickback when starting. This doesn't work on the 1989 and up Volvo models because the ignition timing is fixed with a magnetic pickup on the flywheel. It's an idea worth trying on any car.
